This should be mandatory viewing for all nurses and healthcare professionals.  I came to nursing to secure my future. But I realize that if I choose nursing as my vocation, not just my career, I need to practice compassion with everyone in my environment. That means my friends, family, boyfriend, people I pass on the street, subway riders, coworkers, personal training clients, the Fresh Direct guy who delivered my precious groceries this morning…everyone.  When I was in the customer service industry I was taught that the most important customer is the one right in front of you. If I apply this to nursing then everyone is a patient or potential patient, and as such is vulnerable and in need of compassion. Compassion is essential to alleviating suffering. When this becomes second nature to me, then I will have truly earned the title of “Nurse.”
